The International University Theatre Association (AITU-IUTA) is pleased to announce that its XII World Congress will be held in Moscow, Russia, from the 20th to the 24th of August 2018. Organised by the State-Funded Cultural Institution of Moscow City "Moscow Open Student Theatre" (MOST), the National University of Science and Technology MISIS (NUST MISIS), MGU Student Theatre Development Foundation and AITU-IUTA, this XII Congress seeks to provide a major forum to discuss topical issues regarding the development of university theatres and changes in Theatre curricula and pedagogy in the 21 st century. Our aim is to highlight recent debates, initiatives and innovative approaches that characterize university theatre and redefine its role, position, nature and action in our present world.

Organisers invite theatre directors and actors, theatre festival producers, students, post-graduate students, lecturers and researchers to take part in the Congress. Participants are invited to present on the following issues within the context of University Theatre practices: What defines contemporary university theatres? What is the difference between contemporary practices in university theatre and those of the past? Can we observe the evolution of ideas, dramaturgy, approaches, techniques and methods in theatre? What is contemporary dramaturgy? Are there any changes in theatre-audience relationship? What are the key attributes of the theatre curricula and pedagogical practices today?

The XII Congress offers a variety of opportunities for contributors. It includes an academic conference, workshops, discussion groups, a theatre festival of performances and a poster display of theatre projects and research. The Scientific Committee of the Congress will also invite key speakers with papers and lectures.

Academic contributions will be organised according to the following topics:

  1. The Mission of contemporary university theatre;
  2. Developments of university theatre in our changing world;
  3. Historical considerations in the development of university theatre;
  4. Theatre Pedagogy and performance training today.

Working languages of the conference

The working languages of the Congress are English, French, Spanish and Russian.

Types of participation

Proposals for researchers, academics, artists and experts include the following types of participation:

  1. Papers (15 min followed by 5 min discussion);
  2. Demonstrations (20-60 min);
  3. Workshops (60-120 min);
  4. Performances for the festival;
  5. Poster presentation.

All Congress presenters and observers must be members of the AITU-IUTA.

Participation with papers, demonstrations and workshops

Application submission

Submissions should include no more than a 300 word abstract, in addition to affiliation, contact information and short biographical note that should be given in accordance with the Submission Form. It is also necessary to send formatted abstracts in a separate file (in accordance with the Template Form). Abstracts can be presented in any working language of the Congress but must include a translation into English. The Scientific Committee reserves the right to select the abstracts for the conference programme.


Abstracts accepted by the Scientific Committee will be published (without any corrections) in the Congress Programme with ISBN physical format. It is also planned to publish full-length articles based on the presented works in a volume of the IUTA book series "Theatre and University". Prior to that publication, every submitted manuscript will be peer-reviewed using a double-blind referee system.

Participation in the festival

The application should contain a brief history of the theatre company, contact information, a programme, a synopsis, a video with a recording of the performance, a review of the performance (if available) and other information in accordance with the festival submission form.

Participation in the poster session

The application should contain information about the applying theatre, festival or university (history, activity description, and contact information), description of the composition and layout of materials on the stand or booth, a list of additional equipment (for example, a plasma TV with a USB input, headphones etc.). Technical parameters of the exhibition stands will be presented after the approval of applications by the Organising Committee.

Participation in the discussion session

As an extra event, round tables on the subject of university theatre festivals will be scheduled in the Congress programme. Organisers of theatre festivals, producers, directors and all the participants are invited to take part in the round tables and discuss issues regarding the organization of university theatre festivals, their aims, financial support and sponsoring.

The organisers are open to participants’ proposals for round table topics.

Additional cultural programme

Participants of the Congress will be also offered an optional 2-3 day St Petersburg tour before the Congress, a sightseeing tour around Moscow, excursions to the Moscow Kremlin, the Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum, the Museum of Moscow Art Theatre and other places. Participants can also come up with their own proposals of excursions and tours. A list of the excursions and tours as well as their costs will be given on the Congress website at a later date.

Key dates

  1. Receipt of an application for performance participation in the festival: deadline February 1, 2018; Selection of applications: by March 1, 2018.
  2. Abstract for papers due: March 1, 2018; Abstract selection: by April 1, 2018.
  3. Fees payments: deadline June 1, 2018.
  4. Reception of participants: beginning August 19, 2018.
  5. Congress events: August 20 to 24, 2018.
  6. Check-out of participants: no later than August 25, 2018.


Congress participants pay:

  1. registration fees;
  2. fee for membership in AITU-IUTA;
  3. travel expenses to/from Moscow;
  4. food and lodging;
  5. visa costs (if necessary);
  6. health insurance (if necessary).

Theatre festival participants pay:

  1. registration fees;
  2. travel expenses to/from Moscow;
  3. visa costs (if necessary);
  4. health insurance (if necessary).

Participation in the exhibition is paid if the participant intends to use multimedia equipment on the exhibition stand.

* Registration fee includes:

  1. visa support,
  2. materials of the conference (including the Program of the Congress),
  3. participation in the conference,
  4. entrance to the all public official events of the congress (conference sessions, work-shops (by preliminary registration), performances of the theatre festival),
  5. coffee breaks,
  6. welcome and closing parties,
  7. 1-year individual or institutional membership in the IUTA.


The Organisers suggest the following types of lodging in Moscow.

  1. University comfort accommodation for 6 nights with breakfasts and lunches – 170 EU (total);
  2. On request, single or double room accommodation in a hotel – the cost will be calculated individually.

Organisers will provide accommodation and food (breakfasts and lunches) for festival groups (up to 15 people per group).
